With his debut novel, Geography Club, Brent Hartinger has created a sharp, witty, and touchingly realistic look into the lives of modern gay high school students. Russel has never knowingly met another gay person in his small town. He firmly believes he's the only gay kid at his high school, and...

The story was so scattered, and the writing was nothing special. I spent half the read rolling my eyes.

this was about a boy who is gay and starts a club that he thinks people will think is boring and wont sign up for because, he wants to make a club that just him and his friends know about. but, in the end a girl finds out and they make it in to a club for gay students or people who want to spport gay students at the school. the teachers just think it is a geography club.

This story was about a homosexual boy who creates a club with his friends who are either homosexual or bisexual. They call it the Geography Club in order to not attract straight members to their club. Named their club the Geography Club because they wanted to name it boring name in order for other people not to join the club. This book was a book I liked although it could have been written better. I did not like the ending of the story where Kevin leaves Russel because he really liked Kevin and he wanted them to stay close.

Geography Club, by Brent Hartinger, was published in 2003. It was banned in Tacoma, Washington in 2005. Surprisingly this book wasn't banned for containing/supporting homosexuality, but because of a scene where the main character meets up with a guy he met online. Parents of students complained that they world is a dangerous place, and they don't want their kids thinking it's okay for them to meet up with someone they meet in a chat room. The superintendent of the University Place banned the book from the school system. The author, Brent Hartinger, and many others argued that even though the two characters met in the park after talking in a chat room, they made it clear to each other that they were both boys from the same school. Others also argued that this book has many other positive outlooks, such as the support for gay teens/people.
I think this book was pretty good and would recommend it to others. I don't think that this book should've been banned in Washington. Although it does make it seem that it would be okay to meet up with someone you met online, the age group that would be reading this should know better than that. There are many other themes in this book, not just homosexuality. The view that I got from this book gave me a better understanding of how gay teens feel when trying to fit in at school.

This novel was sweet and yet realistic, and the tone of the main character is absolutely wonderful. The way Russel thinks is hilarious, and the way he views the world is incredily realistic. He is defintely a good representation of the conflicts we find ourselves surrounded by in high school. A wonderful read, but be sure to have an open mind and to remain non-judgmental.
