“Son doesn't realize he is married to his mother. Yep, it's weird like that. ”

Yes | No“ The book Oedipus the King by Sophocles is about a king named Oedipus whose people are stricken by plague and so he consults the Gods about how to get rid of it. When the Gods tell Oedipus they will not end the plague until the previous king's murderer is found, Oedipus seeks out the prophet Tiresias in hopes that this famous prophet can identify the old kings murderer. However, this plan of saving his people from plague backfires when Tiresias announces that Oedipus is the old king's murderer. Oedipus begins to look for answers to his past and in doing so discovers he is married to his biological mother. Overall, the play made a variety of comments about human nature. Tiresias demonstrated that physical blindness is nothing compared to the ignorance that blinds some. ”

As a matter of fact, I read it every semester with my Western Humanities I college students, discussing how Aristotle based his ideas about Tragedy on the work of Sophocles.
Each time I read it (...and I usually end up reading the part of Oedipus), I am amazed at how Sophocles so effectively used dramatic irony to create such a pitiful protagonist, who, no matter how hard he tried to escape his destiny, he ended up running right into into it. He didn't want to kill his father and marry his mother...and he ran away from his parents so he wouldn't commit these taboo acts. But since he really didn't know who his real parents were, he ended up doing just that.
Despite what comes across to a modern-day audience as arrogance, Oedipus was a brave and heroic king who truly wanted to serve his subjects justly. ...and that's what makes him such a tragic character!
Now I need to read "Antigone", which I have never read before.”
“The over all story is intriguing, but I still think it's creepy”

This is where Freud got the term "Oedipus Complex" from.”
“A very difficult read due to the type of language used, but absolutely worth it. After reading this play then studying the "Oedipus Complex", I realized the uniqueness of this play. Never have I read anything so thought provoking about something so morbid. LOL”

When he was old enough to find out this prophicy he decided to run away and try to avoid it. However in the end this only made things worse.
As Oedipus was running away he came upon a carraige with a man inside. The man's gaurds got Oedipus angry and he ended up killing everyone, including the man inside who he later finds out is his father.
As the story goes on, he gets married to his mother (but he is unaware that it is his mother) and has children. Then years later, Oedipus finds out that the man that he killed years ago was indeed his father, and his wife is really his mother!
I really liked this book because it was suspensful and interisting. Normally i wouldn't read these types of books, but in the end I am glad that I did. One of my favorite characters was Oedipus because he had good intentions but in the end he wasn't able to stop his fate.”
