Didn’t Like It“Lackluster. The uber long footnotes that span 5/6 pages only work in books like House of Leaves and effectively (for a small amount of time) in Infinite Jest. Too much name-dropping and people bopping. Blah is how this book made me feel. I didn't even finish the second half.” see full review » see other reviews » |

Yes | No“By themselves, the "top five all time" lists of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" and the footnotes of David Foster Wallace's entire oeuvre are quite charming. Plundered from these original sources and combined with persistent name-dropping and an attitude of self-mythologizing egomaniacal hipsterism, however, they are just more vomit in your eyes. The worst crime of all is the total lack of love that comes through for the music that is supposedly central to this memoir. Does the author actually enjoy this music, or just enjoy cataloging it? Instead, I recommend Love Is A Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield, a heart-breaking and wonderfully written memoir that is everything that this book wants to be, and more.”
