Percy Jackson, along with his friends and the Olympians, fight in a war resembling the original war between the Greek gods and the Titans. Prometheus notes during a parley between him and Percy, that the battle for Manhattan is like the Battle of Troy, except that now Olympus is Troy.

In order to try to head off Kronos's approach by sea, Percy and Beckendorf go to blow up his ship, the Princess Andromeda. However, Kronos is not caught off guard, and Beckendorf sacrifices his life to destroy the ship, while Percy dives overboard and is knocked out by the arrow pierced on his thigh. Percy wakes to see his brother, Tyson (a cyclops). He finds that he is in his father Poseidon's underwater palace, which is under siege by the forces of the Titan Oceanus. Percy wants to stay and help fight with his father, but Poseidon sends Percy back to Camp Half Blood. At Camp Half Blood they learn about the mission and Selena, Bekendorf's girlfriend, is in tears. At a meeting Percy hears the Great prophecy for the first time. The Ares cabin is furious that they get no respect, so they wish not to fight in the war. Then Percy mentions that they have a spy. Someone who has been informing the Titans for years, but they put it aside for now. Soon after arriving, Percy leaves again with Nico, son of Hades, to find out how he might stand a chance against Kronos when the time comes. After visiting Luke's mother and talking with Hestia (who is the Last Olympian), goddess of the hearth and home, Percy procures a blessing from his mother and descends into the Underworld for the second time. Here, Nico betrays Percy for information on his past, but he helps Percy with the original plan and bathes in the River Styx like Achilles and Luke before him.

Percy organizes the demigod campers (minus the Ares cabin), and prepares for an urban battle. They go to Olympus to prepare and meet Hermes, who is furious with Annabeth, who could have stopped the war by helping Luke before he was possessed. Before the battle starts, New York City is silenced by way of a powerful sleeping spell from Morpheus, god of dreams. Despite being joined by numerous helpers- the Hunters of Artemis, satyrs, naiads, dryads and other tree nymphs, Chiron's centaur cousins the Party Ponies, automatons fashioned by the late Daedalus, and the hound Mrs. O'Leary- Percy's forces are consistently forced back by sheer numbers. Kronos is not without losses, as Percy buffets the Titan Lord's brother, Hyperion, into submission, where Grover's nature powers encase the Titan of the East in a massive maple tree. Annabeth is injured by saving Percy from an assault by sword that would have hit his "Achilles Heel". Percy asks Annabeth, who has a poisoned shoulder, how she knew, but she doesn't know. He trusts her enough and tells her his "Achilles Heel".

Rachel, a mortal who can see through the Mist, flies from a family vacation to NYC (and strangely does not fall asleep while every one else in the helicopter does), to tell Percy that he is not the hero of the Great Prophecy, and that it will influence his choice when he turns 16. She also informs Percy that the Titans have a monster that only a child of Ares could destroy, and they instantly know that the spy is still informing the Titans because the Ares cabin is still at camp.

They learn that the monster was a drakon, a monster similar but more destructive then a dragon. The Ares cabin comes when it looks like they would lose. Clarisse tries to kill it but she is nearly killed. Then a new girl comes on a flying chariot and kills the drakon by herself. They find out that the first Clarisse was Selena, and the new girl was actually Clarisse. Selena admits she is the spy. When she wanted to quit he threatened to expose her. She dies a hero, and not a betrayer.

Driven back to the blocks surrounding the Empire State building, Percy and his friends fight in a last stand to protect Mount Olympus from the massive army Kronos has amassed. Even when Hades arrives with his army, Kronos still manages to break through and enter Olympus.

Percy and Kronos as Luke battle in the throne room of Olympus, without either side gaining a significant advantage. Ethan Nakamura, the son of Nemesis, the one who revives Kronos in the previous book, rebels against him at the last minute when Percy helps him see what Kronos would really do if he ruled the world. He trys to kill Kronos but his sword ricochets back into his stomach. With his dying breath, he tells Percy that minor gods deserve better before falling into a fissure created by Kronos. Luke is shocked back into his nonevil self when Annabeth helps him remember his promise of family to Annabeth, as he brutally smashes her across the throne room. The Great Prophecy hinges on Percy's decision to give Luke Annabeth's dagger rather than attempt to kill Luke himself. Luke injures himself at his mortal point (under his left armpit) and uses all his power in one strike on Kronos, making Percy become the hero of the prophecy and ending the war on the dawn of his 16th birthday. Before Luke dies, he tells Percy not to let demigods live unclaimed.

With Poseidon ambushing Typhon at the Hudson River, the Olympians manage to send him down to Tartarus. Returning to the throne room, they grant Percy, Grover, Annabeth, Thalia, and Tyson rewards at the conclusion of their various quests. Percy, refusing godhood for himself, forces the gods to swear on the River Styx that they will recognize all of their children by the time they turn 13, Luke's dying wish. At camp, new cabins are built for every god, including Hades and all the minor gods because of Ethan Nakamura's dying wish. Rachel Elizabeth Dare becomes the new Oracle and speaks the next Great Prophecy, Annabeth is promised that she will be the architect of Mount Olympus in the future, and Grover becomes a Lord of the Wild and member of the Council of Cloven Elders. Tyson is awarded as well, becoming general of the cyclops army and being given a "stick." Later on it talks about Tyson and the cyclops make new cabin for the minor gods and Hades.

Characters edit see section history

  • Perseus "Percy" Jackson: He is 16 years old. He's the main protagonist. Son of Poseidon, the Greek Sea god. One of the most powerful demigods. He goes into a battles against the titans. He has the ability to know (in the ocean) at what exact coordinates he is. He frequently uses the sea to channel power, and attacks his enemies using water.
  • Annabeth Chase: Percy's best friend. Daughter of Athena, Goddess of wisdom and strategy. Apart from being clever, she's sarcastic, brave, pretty, has issues with her family (she ran away from home when she was seven), hard working and loyal. She has gray eyes (like her mother), and used to be in love with Luke. Her dream is to become an architect and build a famous monument (her favourite monument currently existing is the Hoover Dam). She previously was presented with Daedalus's laptop, with blueprints and details of inventions. She uses a celestial bronze knife, instead of a sword, which has a longer reach than a knife.
  • Grover Underwood: Grover is a satyr (half-human, half-goat) and the best friend of Percy Jackson. He loves eating pretty much everything and is afraid of cyclopes, not to mention he dislikes rabbits (bullies). He observed the death of pan and is considered an outcast.
  • Tyson: Tyson is Percy's half-brother. He is six-foot-three and built like the Abominable Snowman, but he cries a lot and is scared of just about everything. He is a Cyclops. He works in the Cyclopes' forges. He goes on quests alongside Percy, Grover and Annabeth.
  • Rachel Elizabeth Dare: She is a red-headed girl who can see through the Mist. She is also daughter of a very rich man and is very talented at art. She usually helps Percy out at difficult times when the help of the mortal is needed. Rachel also shows some romantic interest with Percy but has a certain degree of both tolerance and rivalry against Annabeth on this matter.
  • Charles Beckendorf: Son of Hephaestus. Silena's boyfriend, well loved by everyone at Camp. And is a great friend, is brave and powerful
  • Kronos: He was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of Titans, divine descendants of Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky. He overthrew his father (and it was prophesied that he will overthrow his father, but one day one of his sons would overthrow him in turn) and ruled during the mythological Golden Age, until he was overthrown by his own sons, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and was imprisoned in Tartarus, the deepest realms of the Underworld. Kronos was usually depicted with a sickle or scythe, which was also the weapon he used to castrate and depose Uranus, his father. Kronos has the power to manipulate time.
  • Apollo: He is the god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy; medicine and healing; plague, music, poetry, and the arts. He looked about seventeen or eighteen. He has sandy hair and outdoorsy good looks. He has a bright and playful smile. He owns a Maserati Spyder. He is the son of Zeus and Leto, and has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis (while Apollo is God of the Sun, Artemis is Goddess of the Moon). Apollo has a thing about flirting with the Hunters and thereby annoying his sister. When the Apollo cabin curses another cabin, it causes all the members of the cursed cabin to speak in rhymes.
  • Athena: She is a beautiful gray-eyed woman in an elegant white dress. She is the goddess of wisdom, civilization, warfare, strength, strategy, crafts, justice and skill. Athena is also a shrewd companion of heroes and the goddess of heroic endeavour. She is the virgin patron of Athens. Dislikes Percy Jackson.
  • Silena Beauregard: Leader of the Aphrodite cabin, and she doesn't tease Percy the way the others do. She is in love with Charles Beckendorf.
  • Luke Castellan: He is a son of Hermes. He has blonde hair and blue eyes. Major follower of Kronos
  • Travis Stoll: He is Connor's twin brother. He is skinny, with mops of brown hair that hang in his eyes. He is a son of Hermes and he is one of those who lead his father's cabin. Both twins like responsibility.

  • Dionysus: He is a small, porky guy, but don't mistake him for a stupid teenager--he is the God of Wine, also the director of Camp Half-Blood as a punishment (from Zeus) for flirting with a nymph--but that's another story. He has a red nose, big watery eyes, and curly hair so black it's almost purple.
  • Hestia: She is the Goddess of the hearth and home and keeps the fire in Mt. Olympus going. She is gentle in nature and gave up her throne as a major deity in Mt. Olympus for Dionysus to stop a war from breaking out amongst the gods.

  • Hermes: He is the messenger of the gods. He is also the god of thieves, travelers and medicine. He is slim and fit, with salt-and-pepper hair and a sly smile. He is the father of Luke. He has winged sandals, cobbled for him by Athena (Goddess of wisdom).
  • Hephaestus: He is a huge lump of a man with a leg in a steel brace, a misshapen head, and a wild brown beard, fire flickering through his whiskers. He is the God of Forges and Fire. He is the son of Zeus and Hera, the King and Queen of the Gods. He was the god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. Like other mythic smiths but unlike most other gods, Hephaestus was lame, which gave him a grotesque appearance in Greek eyes. He served as the blacksmith of the gods. Hephaestus's symbols are a smith's hammer, an anvil and a pair of tongs, although sometimes he is portrayed holding an axe. Hephaestus is married to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. It is old gossip that Aphrodite and Ares (the god of war) go out of their way to spend time with each other, and Hephaestus tries to lay traps to catch them and embarrass them. There is usually the Greek letter delta where he lays his traps.

Errata edit see section history

Page 22 of the Nook version Percy states - "I thought about my dream: the Titans discussing the explosion as if it didn't matter, Nico di Angelo warning me that I would never beat Kronos without following his plan - a dangerous idea I'd been avoiding for more than a year". This is impossible because Nico told him this idea at his 15th birthday and Percy is not yet 16. (But he could be rounding up)
