3 and 1/2. This is probably a great book to recommend to Twilight or Wicked Lovely fans--a good reluctant reader book. One of those books with a to-die for cover and mediocre material inside. It was certainly better than Wicked Lovely, but it just seemed to be missing something. The characters were okay, although I found Nicole pretty wishy-washy and weak. The story just didn't keep my attention at times. I guess break dancing is too visual and reading about it is just boring.

This was a very easy, fast read for me. There wasn't much thinking involved when reading this because the writing is very simplistic; but at the same time, I really enjoyed the story. The main character Nicole has a lot of freedom in her role as a teenager. Her parents let her stay out way late in the big city and pretty much lets her do her own thing; but her parents do care about her and her brother whose a drug addict. They just seem to be so wrapped up in their own worlds and trying to keep Nicole's brother from harming himself to worry about what she does or where she's at. But Zin and her are really cute together and they make the story beautiful and come to life in its own way. Zin is a unique character all on his own, so I really fell for him! The break dancing details were pretty interesting to add into it and gave it more flavor. I liked it!!

Van Diepen, Allison Raven, 279 p. Simon, 2009. Language: R (50 swears, 4 "f"); Sexual Content: G (one innuendo); Violence: PG. Nicole is fascinated with Zin - slightly older and a hip-hop genius. When she begins her job at Evermore, the same under-age night club that Zin works at, the owner, Carlo, keeps calling her Raven. But Nicole is obsessed with Zin and break-dancing. Then Nic finds out a depp secret that Zin has been keeping - but he's not the only one he's protecting. Nicole/Raven will change her world and Zin's world forever. This is not a book about vampires - instead it addresses an entirely different creature of the night. If it weren't for the language, it would be a great book for all of your middle school vampire lovers. Leave this one for the high school instead. HS - ADVSIABLE. Cindy - Library Teacher.

This book had a great idea, and it was played out okay, but could have been a lot better. But I will say that it was very different from what I expected (based on what I read from the back cover of the book). I love the cover though, it's beautiful.
Surprisingly, I liked that writing. It was very clean, and there were no noticeable mistakes. Although, it wasn't as descriptive as I would have liked.
There wasn't much character development, and even by the end I felt like I barely knew the characters. They didn't seem to possess the right emotions or reactions for certain situations. I didn't like the characters much to begin with, but that could just be because I couldn't relate to them.
In the beginning there were a lot of irritating break dancing references and scenes but they became less frequent as the story progressed. Other than that I liked the story a lot. The concept of the Jiang Shi and the Heng Te was a creative change from the usual, and I found the ending to be very unexpected.
The biggest problem was that it was so unrealistic. The characters reactions weren't believable, and Zin and Nicole’s' relationship was boring, predictable, and didn't have the tiniest bit of passion in it. And that would be the story’s' greatest downfall.

This review was so hard to write, partly because I'm so conflicted about it. There are things make me go "oooh!" like the fact that Nicole is a break dancer. And then there are so many others that make me go "bleh", like the minor characters. They seemed like basic sketches; I didn't know a lot about them and thus I didn't care if anything really happened to them. The main point however was Nicole and Zin's love for each other, and that was well done.

The tone, the style of writing: it's not something I was used to. I found it hard to relate to Nicole at the start because her lifestyle is just so different from mine: she works and a club and she's also a break dancer, while I'm more the stay at home type. Luckily for me, underneath it all she's still a girl and that I can relate to.

Nicole and Zin are in love with each other, there's no doubt of that. Their bond was obvious from the start of the story. They were the best of friends: he was her rock, the one she turned to whenever something happened. When Nicole's brother Josh went on a downward spiral from his addiction to drugs and split their family apart, Zin was there. Sometimes it felt like Zin could see right through her soul, he knew everything about her! After Nicole was almost killed and then saved by Zin, the secret finally comes out.

The secret wasn't a shocker for me, having been played out often. I could honestly say that I went "Huh. That's all? What's the big deal?" after the truth came out, but since I'm a sucker for seemingly star crossed lovers and I love to see how they overcome things, I had to finish reading. The ending was a slight disappointment. It just doesn't seem to be a satisfying conclusion. Luckily the rest of the story redeemed it.
