Jessilyn Lassiter has always loved her friend Gemma. It didn't matter that Jessilyn was white and Gemma was black nor did the fact that then lived in a racist town in Virginia during the year of 1932. The summer Jessilyn turned 13 was suppose to be the best of her life! But the fire that left Gemma an orphan changed everything. Jessilyn's family takes Gemma in as their own which quickly causes some trouble for the Lassiter's as once friendly neighbors turn a cold shoulder to the white family who took in a black girl.
