At the outset of the Peninsular War in 1808 the British expeditionary force that landed at Mondego Bay near Lisbon was, to anticipate Kaiser Bill's rather unfortunate turn of phrase, a 'contemptible little army' which merely promised to be an irritant rather than a serious threat to the mighty armies of imperial France.
