This is a good book about diversity and acceptance. Its about a clumsy giraffe named Gerald. Kids enjoy this book because it deals with a relatable topic and it has animals for characters; which they always flock to. The illustrations are great too.

    Title: Giraffes Can’t Dance
    Author: Giles Andreae
    Illustrator: Guy Parker-Rees
    Publisher: Scholastic, Inc
    Copyright: 2001
    Appropriate grade levels: PreK-3
Summary: The story is about a clumsy giraffe named Gerald. Every year all the animals in the jungle have a jungle dance. Gerald watches the other animals for a while and then decides he wants to try to dance himself. When he walks into the center of the dance even before he tries, they make fun of him. They tell him that he is a klutz and cannot dance because he is a giraffe. He then meets a cricket who teaches him that sometimes different people need different music to be able to dance. He dances to his own music and finds out that he can dance better than anyone else.
    Uses in Classroom:
*To introduce the concept of diversity.
*To teach acceptance and tolerance. It could be used to explain that not everyone learns the same way.
*Students can write about one thing they do very well and one thing that they have difficulty with. You could compare these things and talk about how everyone has things that they excel in and things that challenge them.

This is one of our favorite books as a family. I love the message it sends - be true to yourself, value your own special gifts, take risks, and enjoy the music in life. Wonderful verse & poetic rhythm.

The annual Jungle Dance and Gerald the Giraffe is going to feel left out. Until he finds a dance of his own. Nice children's book, but what dance is Gerald dancing? Interpretive, hehe?

It only takes confidence in yourself, and a friend to do anything. A favorite at my house.
