“This book had traces of a lot of popular teen romances: Pretty in Pink, Say Anything, Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, Twilight, etc. But what the book lacked in foundational originality, it more than compensated for in intensity. There was no "neat red bow" ending for any of the characters, even those whose stories ended happily. It was wonderful to read a young adult romance devoid of "Mary Sue" type characters with no real flaws and only the shallowest of conflicts. This book is "real", as our protagonist, Alex, would say. ”
