“This is the sixth book in the line of books based on the 'Halo' universe by Bungie. I say line rather than series because they aren't sequels or prequels. They're books set in the same universe with some same key characters.

This book takes place just before the Fall of Reach and details the adventures of the 'Grey Team' and a whole web of alliances and battles between the UNSC, the Insurrectionists and the ever-approaching Covenant.
Compared to the other five books, this one is noticeably less action-y. This isn't necessarily a problem, but any avid reader of the Halo books should know that Tobias does have a different writing style. And because the book is based more on dialogue, conspiracy and such this is quite a different read.
As for people new to the Halo franchise, this would not be a bad starting point. There isn't anything better than starting with the games, but if you were more into books than gaming, this would be a good entry point. As for more hardcore Halo fans, you've probably already read this. For those who haven't yet, just be warned that this is a completely different entity to that of 'The First Strike', 'Contact Harvest' or any of the games.
Also I think that the author develops some characters but leaves some others a little shallow. I think the author assumed they had been developed in other books and he probably didn't need to.
All in all, the book is a great read, and a great gateway into the world of Halo, but any previuos fan should be forewarned that this isn't the action flick-made book they might be expecting.

“I've been a big fan of the different halo novels. I'm always excited when another one comes out. So I was very curious about this one.

Tobias Buckell had good predecessors when it comes to the Halo universe. This is something that works in his disadvantage: the Halo universe is something which has been around for quite some time now and I can image it is hard to get yourself in it with a new book/story. Tobias really tried his best I recon, but it just didn't cut it. An important note though: as a stand alone novel (or your first read in the Halo universe), it really explains things well and is easy to follow. But for a die-hard Halo fan, it's a bit less interesting. Maybe it's just because I'm used to the other authors, but the actions sequences weren't really filled with action. It even felt if Tobias tried to avoid very complex action scenes.
He did place his characters right. All the characters played there role in the story really well. It was nice to see some new behavior from the Covenant. But as imjosh stated in his review: there was no real character development. Everything just merely touches the surface. It's just enough to make the story go, but nothing else.
So would I recommend this book? As a stand-alone novel, I would really recommend it, also if it's the first book you'll read about the Halo universe. As a die-hard Halo fan, I was a bit dissapointed. Of course, if you're a die-hard fan, you'll read it anyway (and you should), but maybe getting it from a friend instead of buying it is a better choice.”“Good book overall.
