“Great fantasy. Young girl goes on a quest with the help of a bear. Classic.”

Suddenly, Lyra finds herself in a bitter struggle to save children who have been kidnapped by the Gobblers.
Lyra's world is not precisely like our own. For one thing, people there each have a personal dæmon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form. For another, hers is a universe in which science, theology, and magic are closely allied.
The story is a children's book that will appeal to adults.

“I really like it!”

This book starts off a trilogy about three different worlds which somewhat resemble our Earth and are all linked together. The main character Lyra is thrust into an adventure that pairs her with gypsies, witches, a hot-air balloon, and a fighting/talking "Polar" bear. A great book for those who may have read/seen Harry Potter but are looking for something more complex, dark, or adult.”
