Northern Lights (His Dark Materials)

Northern Lights (His Dark Materials S.)

by Philip Pullman

Some books improve with age--the age of the reader, that is. Such is certainly the case with Philip Pullman's heroic, at times heart-wrenching novel, The Golden Compass, a story ostensibly for children but one perhaps even better appreciated by adults. The protagonist of this complex fantasy is young Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Oxford University. But it... (read more)

AMAZING series. Some of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The HDM series is intelligent, fun, and breathtaking. [br/][br/]The movie was great as well, but I highly recommend reading the series before you see it. The series is a huge seller here in our new/used local bookstore in Los Osos, Cali.[br/][br/]It's a book that's good for all ages, whether you're 8 or 78 years old. It has a wide audience, just as the Harry Potter series does.[br/][br/]If you're not wanting...

Didn’t Like It

I read this series and it started out very well with good characterization, engrossing ideas and clear storytelling. In the second and third books, though, the author lost a lot (including my interest) and exposed himself as a master of vaguery and complication. The ideas kept coming, but they weren't as good. The characters became the main draw of the books but the plot was reduced to fantastical, ungrounded drivel. Still better than Harry Potter, though.

I've tried repeatedly to add "The Golden Compass" to my list. I'm using ISBN 978-0-440-23813-3 to locate it. It shows up fine some places, but reverts to "Northern Lights" when I try to get to it to write a review. What's going on, and who knows how to fix it?

I watched the movie before reading the book - not a good idea i know! The movie seemed a little rushed so i decided to read the book next and it was worth it. I was much more satisfied with this ending than that of the movie, i can not wait to read the second instalment.

I agree that this book should be rated T for teens, else children should read it with parents. The movie missed out many details prob due to budget and running time and content... but Mrs Colter is black haired... not a blond. I just don't understand why people like to go for witch hunts and persecute story books, to each their own interpretations, else it's just a book to entertain your mind. Fine if the author has an agenda, I still treat it as a story and not a propaganda / heresy. But yes, it's a very interesting story, with the concept of multi verse rather than universe.

I really enjoyed this book, could not put it down. Fast pace, I love the steam punk technology and the daemons. Pure escapism.
