“Jane V said: This combo murder mystery/romance is set in a small town in Alaska. The main characters are Nate (an emotionally-damaged detective-turned-police chief) and Meg (an emotionally damaged bush pilot*). I liked the characters and the way that Roberts depicted life in Lunacy, Alaska. Unfortunately, I thought the book was way too long; it is over 500 pages and it could have been tightened to 200. (The length made me wonder if Roberts, like Dickens, gets paid by the word). If it had been 200 pages I could have stuck with it, but around page 400 I gave up because I found it difficult to stay engaged. I skipped to the end to find out "who did it" and was disappointed when I found out who it was (is that terrible?).
Nicole R., if you read this I'd love to know what you thought of this novel as compared to other mysteries by Roberts or Robb.
*As a personal aside, instead of imagining Meg as Roberts described her I COULD NOT get the image of Maggie -- the bush pilot from TV's Northern Exposure -- out of my head when reading this book. I finally gave up and just went with it.”
“This is a combination murder mystery/romance novel set in the small town of Lunacy, Alaska. I liked Roberts' characters and the way she portrayed the small town. I felt it was too long (over 500 pages and I felt she could have told it in 200), though. I had a hard time staying with the story (it didn't draw me in) and ended-up skipping the last 100 pages to find out "who did it". ”

It is very easy to pick yourself up and put yourself into the pages of this book along with the other characters. You feel as if you belong in Lunacy, Alaska along with all the other locals. Watching the relationship between Meg and her mother while getting to know the relationship between Nate and Meg is great!
Nate Burke comes to Lunacy, Alaska to escape his life in Baltimore and to escape his past. Nate Burke is the new Lunacy Police Chief and he must win over the positive opinion of the locals, some of which are not impressed that the mayor hired from the outside. When a crime surfaces after a mountain rescue in Lunacy, Nate discovers that the case is over ten years old.
Nate also never imagines that he will find a girl in Lunacy, Alaska. That is until he meets Meg Galloway. She immediately catches his eyes when he arrives. However, he quickly discovers she comes with some baggage and she is a cough nut to crack.
I would recommend this book to adults who are looking for a book that brings them romance and mystery all in one. It's very well written and is not raunchy in anyway. Nora Roberts hits excellence again in Northern Lights. ”
“i loved this one . the chemistry between the characters and the mystery of her father's murdered. excellent once again”

A great book to read in the winter time. Oh, and I so want to go to Alaska now.”
“I liked it, Nate Burke - cop and Meg Galloway - bush pilot”
