These endearing stories by Spanish Nobel laureate Juan Ramon Jimenez are a series of monologues between a man and his donkey (Platero); as well as with Diana the Goat and a parrot who's only words are "Ce n'est rien" (it is nothing). These stories are really something! I also recommend reading Juan Ramon Jimenez's selected poems & prose, "Light and Shadows."
