“It was just O.K. Isn't a book that I'd recommend.”

Yes | No“Kirsten Menger-Anderson's imaginative debut novel is cleverly comprised of chapters, each detailing the lives of doctors; all descendants of one physician who arrives in New Amsterdam in 1664. Set against the backdrop of an emerging New York City, the peculiarities of their medical specialties are described in rather grotesque detail as they struggle to cope with their own family madness and the latest medical breakthrough of their day. Despite her beautiful literate prose, I felt that some of the chapters ended too abruptly; I wanted sometimes to spend more time in that particular generation. I also needed to refer to the family tree at the beginning of the book too often. However, I am looking forward to Menger-Anderson's next book - she certainly does know how to put words on paper.”
