In typical Anne Perry style, this book began slowly as the groundwork was laid and then sped to an ending that tied up all the loose ends. I think I'm addicted to her books. Or I just like things tidy. That's why reading is my escape.

This book pulled me in from the very beginning and had me very excited over finding a new mystery author. However, I was extremely disappointed with the ending. I felt like Perry ran out of "oomph" at the end of the book and decided to wrap it up and did so in a manner of about two pages. I will probably give her one more try and hopefully the ending will give me a little more closure than this last one. Talk about anti-climatic.

Perry's late Victorian detective gets called in to deal with the death of a minor diplomat in the garden of an Egyptian woman who is connected with someone very prominent. She's the logical suspect—but did she really do it? The trail takes him to Egypt in the aftermath of Khartoum, and back into the slums of London, tracing things people did while away from home. But what happened in Egypt didn't stay in Egypt. The fate of the Empire lies in the result of the trial as dirty deeds are unearthed that need to stay buried.
