This novel covers the time after WWI, and involves former soldiers who are wounded in mind as well as body.”

Listened to a Playaway version, which let me do small tasks and still listen. Winspear seemed to get us behind the suffering of the men who returned from WW!, damaged in liimb and mind in a way as to make them come to life again. Suffering, not only in obvious ways, but also because their country and countrymen often had little use for them despite their extreme sacrifice.
The personal story of Maisie's life and her employee, Billy, threaded through out was most skillfully executed. And I like the way the book didn't abruptly end when the threat to Londeners' safety was brought to a successful conclusion. More, much more, was revealed in the last chapters...both concerning the main story line and in Maisie's life. Five stars!”
“Jacqueline Winspear is one of my favorite authors. We wait for each new book to come out. ”

In this installment, Maisie helps her assistant Billy's wife who is experiencing some mental health difficulties, and also helps to solve a conspiracy by a madman to commit mass murder. Maisie gets additional respect from the authorities at this point in her career, which is nice to see considering the time period when the books are set. ”
