A profoundly moving, spiritual story about a young man's quest to seek revenge on his adulterous wife by making her accompany him to a cholera-infested village in China. This is vastly different (and far better) than the recent film adaptation starring Edward Norton and Naomi...

You know the saying that the book is always better than the movie? Well, I don't feel that that applies to this. I saw the film before I read the book and I gotta tell ya, the movie is much better. The book had a totally different ending, among other, MAJOR things (mainly pertaining to the wife,...

Definitely a classic! I really enjoyed reading this. I loved that the chapters were short, because they were so readable. The main character, Kitty, experiences a great change in character through the course of the novel, and her change is completely believable. I look forward to watching the movie, but I can't imagine it will be as good as the novel!

The story begins with the very unlikable Kitty Fane. She is selfish, vain, and is bored with her husband. After an adulterous affair, Kitty travels with her husband to an area stricken by cholera.

Kitty begins to work in the nearby convent while the nuns nurse those stricken with the disease. During this time, Kitty attempts to repair her broken marriage. Just when she begins to make amends, tragedy strikes. Kitty is left alone to face her demons.

I enjoyed watching Kitty's character evolve throughout the story. I first noticed the change when she began embracing the orphans in her care instead of being repulsed by them. She begins to understand that, in the face of so much suffering, her problems are very small. Kitty begins to empathize with others and make better choices. In the end, Kitty is stronger than she realizes and her tragedy is really the beginning of a new life.

I thought it very evocative of the English lifestyle and way of thinking in places like India and China at that time. The writing style and sentence structure was just perfect as SM developed the characters and setting. I was a bit astonished at the number of times Kitty changed her feelings and matured in so short a time frame. The most recent movie had beautiful photography, but a slightly altered plot.

This is a very well written story, but I don't really like the fact that the characters' conflict doesn't really solve out.

The characters are very interesting, and even though I pushed for a different ending, I think the author has created a believable tale of missed opportunities while still focusing on the hope that remains.

I saw the film before I read the book and I gotta tell ya, the movie is much better. The book had a totally different ending, among other, MAJOR things (mainly pertaining to the wife, Kitty) that made the movie so sad...yet a good film. I don't wanna potentially ruin it for anyone so I won't mention the specifics. You have to tell for yourself. If you are gonna read the book just make sure you at least see the movie at some point in your life...

I enjoyed this novel. Except for one blip of storyline, I found it satisfying
