The diary of a girl who's father has just died. He was a teacher in Broken Bow, Kansas. A women who's taking care of her and a minister are sending her to an orphan asylum. But Sarah Jane hears bad things about it and tries to think ofa way that she can stay in Broken Bow. When she has the idea to take her father's postion as teacher, nobody thinks it's a good idea. But she still gets the job and proves herself by saving all of the children from the burning down school. She ends up staying for 36 years teaching.
