Critics don't seem to laud this piece by Steinbeck so much, but I think it is his best work. It is fascinating to observe the master at work - his characterizations are simply superb - just a few lines and the character comes alive and stands in front of you. Steinbeck is in his element here.
Definitely read this book if you want to see the very best in the art of characterization.
