“Tortilla Flat is about a group of drunken slackers and their friendship with each other. When Danny inherits a house, one by one, all his friends end up moving in with him, and although they have nothing, they somehow manage to take care of each other’s basic needs.
I wasn’t fond of any of the characters at first, but by the middle of the book, they had grown on me. The strength of their friendship with each other and the simple, free lives they lead are really touching and nostalgic. It’s definitely not one of Steinbeck’s best books, but it comes together quite nicely by the end.”
“Funny, yet insightful. This is definitely a gem. ”

Some of its themes were wealth/poor, trust, and most importantly, friendship. As a young reader, I probably missed some details in the book or misunderstood some parts. The only problem with Tortilla Flat is that the book was mostly complied stories about Danny and his friends, with no main conflict. In some parts the book lacked direction and the chapters, read out of order, would still make sense.
All in all, it is a good book to read because it is told with great narration about the simple lives of the poor people of Tortilla Flat.”
“Not my favorite Steinbeck but still it IS John Steinbeck and he is a wonderful writer.”

Loved the characterization of these motley "knights" and the humanity of their interactions. A strong sense of empathy peeks from beneath the leathery skins of these characters and left me satisfied turning the last page. Good classic lit. ”
