Don't waste your time with this one unless you need a cure for insomnia. I bought it for the Sookie story, but even it was a huge disappointment. This will go straight to the used bookstore as a trade-in.

Finally, a short story collection where I thought all but one of the stories were good. The only one I didn't like was Appetite for Murder by Simon R. Green. That felt completely phoned in--it was flat and predictable and boring. The rest of the collection is quite good. I particularly liked the entries by Carole Nelson Douglas, Sharon Shinn, John Straley, Laura Anne Gilman, Laurie King, and Dana Stabenow. Recommended for those fans of fantasy mixed with mystery.

Definitely a mixed bag, since I don't enjoy swords and sorcery fantasy much these days and this anthology contained more than I care for. That said, Laurie R. King's "The House," a classic haunted house story, was good enough that I read it twice. Other stories I really liked: Sharon Shinn's "The House of Seven Spirits"; Michael Armstrong's "The Duh Vice"; and Dana Stabenow's "A Woman's Work." Stories that were just okay were Charlaine Harris's "Lucky," Simon R. Green's "An Appetite for Murder" and John Straley's twisted Santa story, "The Weight of the World." The rest I genuinely didn't like. YMMV since it was more a case of my being pretty picky about my fantasy reading than a case of bad writing.

I was skeptical upon buying this book because i did not like Powers of detection (the previous anthology). I bought this book mostly for the stories by Simon r green and charlaine harris..... but i found that i enjoyed pretty much all the rest too, it turns out that the sookie story was my least fave of them all! Green's story was pretty good, as usual. And i really enjoyed Sharon shinn's "house of seven spirits", and Dana stebnow's "a woman's work".

This book has given me a couple authors whose other novels i'm gona look into. The only downside was (as with all anthologies) the stories were a bit too short :)

This book prominently displays: "Includes a New Sookie Stackhouse Story," which it does, but the book is not worth buying for that story. Frankly, this is the second Sookie Stackhouse short story that has sorely disappointed. I can only hope that with the popularity of the True Blood HBO series Charlaine Harris has felt pressured to produce something and this does not mean the creative well is running dry.

On the other hand, the Delilah Street story by Carole Nelson Douglas was delightful. Fun for those who have read her novels (I have), but not too confusing for those who have not. The Simon R. Green Nightside story did not directly involve any of the major characters from the Nightside books but still with all the delicious weirdness that marks as "Nightside."

The Laurie R. King was a wonderful, stand-alone story, as were some of the others, although I am really not familiar enough with the other authors' work to tell. All-in-all worth the time, but, as with any anthology, some are always going to be better than others

This is another one of those anothologies I've only read one story because I'm only interested in the Simon Green (Nightside stories). Green's story was wonderful, but I've tried reading some of the other stories with no real interest.
