This Tom Robbins tome has deepened my love and appreciation for the golden elixir of life (though i generally prefer the darker varieties). Like always he entertains while informing us of the great mysteries of life.

kinda hard to keep switching back and forth between the child and adult dual storyline. otherwise good for an afternoon read and not necessary to read all at once.

Kindergartner, Gracie Perkel is curious about beer. Her curiosity is brought on by too much time spent with her strange old Uncle Moe. In an angry fit, she chugs two cans from her Daddy's fridge, throws up on her Hello Kitty rug, and dreams about a beer fairy (if only there was such a thing).
This is a fun and quick (only 126 pages) read. Robbins calls the book "a children's book for grown-ups," and "a grown-up book for children." The narrator addresses a child reader, but the content is certainly not meant for children, although I'm pretty sure my own kid would like it. I love the way Robbins weaves in the occasional political/social jab. Something about the language he uses, like mother to child, makes the jabs all the more insulting. Politicians, religious zealots and conservatives should beware.
My favorite character is Uncle Moe. He is drunken, jobless, spontaneous, and wise beyond his world. Like Larry Diamond in Half Asleep in Frogs Pajamas, there is something grubby and at the same time wildly atractive about Uncle Moe. Though I know very little about Robbins personally (only that he has been married four times), I imagine that much of Uncle Moe is taken from Robbins' own personality. That's the way I like to think of him anyway.
So here's my question: How many readers would read this to their own kid and at what age? I'm pretty honest with my kid. Babies don't come from storks, Mommy buys all his Christmas presents from the store, and I've never told him that my beer was juice (mostly out of fear that he would drink it). How much is too much information for a young child like Gracie? Will she be better off in the long run for her early exposure to such adult fodder, or will beer become her gateway to heroine and a life of crime?

Not his best, just glimpses of his normal, irreverent and unique writing style. I think I will go back and read Still Life again.

Tom Robbins does not disappoint. Whoda thunk he would or could write a kid's book that you could actually read to your kid. Loved it.

Almost entirely unrepresentative of Tom Robbins' talent as a writer. (Also, as a person who spent a lot of her childhood around drunk adults, the premise of the book struck me as rather.. ill-advised. To say the least. The author walks a thin line throughout and for a not particularly noble cause, in my opinion.)

after reading the reviews i didn't have high expectations, but i did find i enjoyed the book for what it was and that made it so much more simple that way. to just enjoy it and not place such a huge expectation because it's tom robbins and you want and except to be blown away by his wonderfully layered stories. i loved the little girl and her adventures with the fairy. it's exactly what it says and you can't ask for more.
