The Air Loom Gang is one of my favorite books for how it casts light upon a small but fascinating piece of history, connecting it with larger themes and outcomes, while keeping the humanity of the central figures alive throughout the book. James Tilly Matthews may have been mad, but he is someone I would have liked to have met. His stubborn good cheer and dedication to causes, including his own intellectual survival in adversity, is as heart-warming and quixotic as any fiction imaginable. I...
