Dark, dark, dark! This book is very dark and the writing is very good. If you like your books hard-boiled, this one is for you. I plan on reading all the Charlie "Bird" Parker books. Not for the faint of heart as it is very graphic.

Great writing and a quick pace, but rooted in such vivid, graphic, horrendous violence that it felt voyeuristic. Added to that is the required suspension of belief as mystical forces help guide the hero in an evocation of the Deep South that's none too original. The best of the book is the gay couple who help the hero...again, shades of other books (Hawk or Joe Pike), but with an appealing twist.
