In October 1972, a chartered plane carrying the Old Christians Rugby Club from Uraguay to an exhibition match in Chile, crashed and shattered on a glacier in the remote, rugged Andes. This insightful and inspirational first-person account chronicles the 72-day ordeal of the survivors, including the climb across seemingly insurmountable peaks by the author and a teammate to find help when the search is officially abandoned and all hope of rescue seems lost. Keep the blankets and hot cocoa nearby.

The book Miracle in the Andes by Parado, is an amazing story of perseverance. The book is an autobiography, about one of the survivors in a crash in the Andes. Nando, the author, was on a road trip for rugby, when his pilots made the decision to take a risky flight through a slightly stormy Andes. Caught over the Andes, the storm intensifies. The plane crash lands in the middle of the Andes with no radio, or any supplies. Nando takes a serious head injury in the crash, and recovers to find his mother and his sister both had died in the crash. Nando is left with a few other survivors who attempt to survive while they wait for rescue. The survivors are forced to feed of the corpses of the dead to survive hunger. When it is decided that a rescue team will not be coming, Nando and another man set off on a long trek back home. Nando is able to return, and bring help to those still stranded. I rated this book a five star because the story is so amazing. Nando was able to travel more than seventy miles, a feat that should not have been possible for him, even if he was not weakened by his stay in the mountains. This story is an amazing tale of endurance and perseverance. Nando’s amazing perseverance allowed him to win the battle against nature and conquer the Andes.

It was very hard to put down. It is profound. You can almost feel what it was like to be there. I admire the survivors and especially Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa who made the hazardous, almost impossible trek out of the Andes. The love they felt for their families and their faith in God gave them the determination to fight with every ounce of their breath for their lives. This book is inspiring. The author is on my list of most admired persons.

A few years ago, I saw this book in my library and checked it out to read it. Unfortunately, I didn't get around to it. Years later, I bought this story and started to read it RIGHT AFTER "Alive." I though that "Alive" was something, but this, this "Miracle in the Andes" is way more fascinating. Survivor, Nando Parrado gives his first hand account on what had happened on the mountain in such detail that he makes you feel as you were there with him. If you've read "Alive" or seen the film and are afraid that the spiritualism will be excluded from this book, you're more than wrong. It is hear and even more so. In fact, if you haven't read any of these two books based on the Andes survivors and don't know where to start, I recommend this one. I tell you, the way Parrado writes, this will come as close as you can get to time traveling back to 1972. Believe me, once you read this, you will see how precious and valuable life is and what it takes to keep it. Enjoy!

WOW! I read "Alive" when it was first published in the 1970s, and still I was not prepared for how viscerally I would respond to THIS memoir. Parrado lays bare his soul in describing his (and his teammates') ordeal.

Interesting, horrific survivor story. This is Parrado's memoir of surviving a plane crash in the Andes Mountains that killed his mother, sister, and some members of his rugby team. While the trials the survivors endured are tremendous, I felt like Parrado came out looking a little too much like the hero.

All superlatives. As interesting as I found "Alive," Nando Parrado's own take on these events puts the dry recitation of fact by Piers Paul Read in the shade. He tells you so much more about what it was like to be in that dreadful situation, what got them through it and -- most interesting of all to me -- what happened to the survivors afterwards. I'd recommend this to anyone.
