Joseph Campbell breaks down the idea of myth as metaphor and will open up new avenues of thought in your brain. If you're into Jungian psychology and dream symbolism this for sure is a must read. It is astounding.

One of the best books I've ever read.

An exploration of the elements and structure of mythology across civilizations. The book explores the relevance and reality of myth in our own life.

I literally try to read this book once a year. It is essential for people who do any kind of creative writing, but it's also an amazing book by one of America's most entertaining scholars.

Finally finished! generally god. It's impressive that it's so old and yet. . I'm sure he'd say many of the same things about how our society has lost it's myth.

If you want to get beyond Freytag's pyramid in understanding plot structure, this is the quintessential Joseph Campbell book to get you there. In it he outlines the monomyth (heroic cycle) found in myths and stories across continents and eras, finally coming to an understanding of the universal story that describes the human experience. Anyone wanting to understand the meaning of life should read it.

Only get if you are interested in Mythology or Psychology, otherwise this may bore. Took me two attempts to finish, it was worth it in the end. Don't agree with some of the theories, but... one will never agree 100% on most things (especially subjects where there are no obvious answers like mythology.)
