Like all of her books this is ripping with racial tension, with oppression rising up against the ropes that bind it, all done face to face, eye to eye like you are standing there looking oppression right in the face--or perhaps that you are oppression being looked at closely by another. I particularly like the mythical that she weaves into this one, as well as the loops relating to the queen ant who, while falling from the sky to retire herself to egg laying for her eternity, remembers the male winged ant she'd mated with in the mid-air, "he f#@!ed like a star." Be prepared for the very uncomfortable thread of a baby being poked in the bottom with needles by his mother.”

She comes home to the Carribean island and falls hard for Son, a violent, uneducated Black man. The wealthy landowners for whom her family have long worked and her family members themselves, harbor secrets. Surprising . . .”
