It was definitely an interesting approach to Mary's life years after her sisters married, but the outcomes of the sister's marriages completely...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“This was an audio book which I enjoyed. I wasn't sure if I would like a 'what if...' type Mary Bennett and although McCulloch has done a reasonable job at continuity, there was an air of sensationalism that was not part of the original enchanting read of Elizabeth Bennett and her family. However, curiosity got the better of me, I just had to know, even tho' I knew it would never have been that way, what happened in this family. Good on you Colleen, but I would never go to see a film of this book! And it was only that it was on audio that I bothered.”

Then, halfway through, the plot got a bit ridiculous, and it never recovered in it's believabilty after this. Not bad as trashy historical fiction, but could have been so much more.”

Certainly it lends itself to sequels by having so very many secondary characters to speculate about. "Whatever happened to so-and-so?" wonders an author, idly on a summer afternoon, and hey presto arrives another book to tell the tale!
A couple of things make this one different. Colleen McCullough established her reputation with Thornbirds -- one would presume she's not desperate for Austin's coattails. Another interesting difference is in her version of events, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are not, after all, content in their wedded bliss. In fact, as the story opens, they have as little to do with one another as possible. One problem, though not the only one, is Elizabeth's family -- a constant annoyance and expense to Fitz (as he is called), as well as a threat to his political ambitions.
That the middle sister, bookish and religious Mary Bennett, who holds center place in a book of her own is another surprise. She is transformed, of course. Who would read about her if she were not?
If you adore all things Darcy, then this book is for you. Otherwise, probably not.”
“I found it quite a fun read, but nothing of the caliber of her other books. ”

Collen McCullough wrote in the right style to make it as well as Jane did.”

Darcy becomes a bit of the enemy in this book, so beware. But in typical American fashion - it all rounds up happy in the end. ”
