It was like The Village meets I am Legend. I felt that it was really dark, but the writing was not bad at all.

wow i totally agree with Evie, i just finished it last night, and i couldn't get into the characters either. The author doesn't explain Mary's obsession with the Ocean, nor why she's willing to give up everything for it. Travis is not an interesting character all, basically just your ordinary male love interest, with no background, no character.

Couldn't believe the end, but i won't say more, in case someone still want to read it...

Save your money and get this used or borrow it from the library or a friend.

I'll give it 2 stars just because it kept me turning pages out of curiosity only. The characters lack depth and the reader is stuck inside the main character's head as she endlessly, prattles on about the same things over and over again. It didn't take long to get tired of the words fence, path, and Unconsecrated and the endless I, I, I It could have used more dialogue between characters to give readers a richer, deeper sense of their connection, their struggle, their emotions. I didn't care one bit about these characters at all. The cover mentions romance but it isn't there.

This debut author has the ability to write "hooks", and with practice I think she can write a more involved story that will arouse readers emotionally. This story feels like a bare bones rough draft that could have been fleshed out to be a really great read. Just add some fresh vocabulary and new expressions.

Stephanie Meyer, with Twilight, was able to make us love Edward and care for whiny Bella, so it can be done.
