Jess who was adopted to Americans didn't even know she was a vampire and if Lucius can’t get her to agree to the pact, there could be a vampire war. It was definitely a different take on vampire lore than usual. I found the beginning of this novel very amusing (especially Lucius' letters home) but then things took a serious turn and kind of left me a little unsettled. Just when Jess starts to realize she's falling for Lucius, he starts dating the evil size 0 cheerleader Faith who has always treated Jess like dirt. At first I thought he was "fake" dating her to make Jess jealous but when that no longer applied, I thought he was doing it to make Jess mad so that he could save her from agreeing to the pact. But to find out that he was dating her because he wanted to because she understood him and it was nice to date someone without the weight of your family forcing you to. Uggh! Add on top of that they there was nothing "fake" about there relationship and they were being intimate – eckk! – as far as I’m concerned Faith could have him. It kind of ruined the love story aspect for me. But of course all is easily forgiven and ends as expected. ”

It truly did keep me guessing until the end. Some situations may make this more suited to high school students.”

Thank goodness then for J's rave review of this book, which encouraged me to check it out despite this prejudice against the undead. I might have otherwise missed out on Lucius Vladescu, surely one of the most winning teen romantic leads ever written. Worth reading just for Lucius' appalled letters to his Romanian vampire uncle Vasile, in which he mocks American high school life to hilarious effect.
Ex:
As you know, I have always been curious about our immortality... how it will feel to live on and on through time (assuming one avoids the stake, as I intend). I need speculate no longer. I have sampled eternity in Miss Campbell's fifth period "social studies" class. Three days on the concept of "manifest destiny," Vasile. THREE DAYS. I yearned to stand up, rip her lecture notes from her pallid hands, and scream, "Yes, America expanded westward! Is that not logical, given that Europeans settled on the eastern shore? What else were they to do? Advance vainly into the sea?"

This is the same theme I've seen in so many teen books of late...unsure teenage girl has mysterious and brooding older/man take interest in her...That would still be OK in this case if it eventually turned into something healthy that teen girls could actually look up to. But no. We have her mom telling her "disgust turns to lust." Jess is both terrified of and attracted to her suitor who happens to be her vampire betrothed, cuz it turns out she's a vampire princess who needs to marry this vampire Lucius in order to unite some vampire clans. OK, that sounded promising, but then we actually meet Lucius and he's an absolute jerk. Arrogant, prideful, and even abusive. He was abused as a child and thought that's just normal, so he's pretty messed up. The author doesn't even address that Jess may actually want to marry a nice guy and have kids and not have them abused in a military upbringing. Another thing, I don't think we should be promoting teens getting married at eighteen no matter what their destiny is...and then the topper for me was when Lucius told Jess that the male vampires get their fangs at puberty and that female ones don't get theirs until they are bitten by a male! I threw the book right then and there across the room and said "misogynistic crappola!" And that was the end of that for me. I feel that this is a horrible book for teens especially for girls. Icky.”
