Masterfully written, fascinating, and engaging. A must read for anybody with even a slight interest in Political Science.

I am glad I read this book. It was a little slow at first, but then I got drawn into the stories that make up this book. I've always thought of the PRC as "radical left", but the portraits in this book reminded me of descriptions I'd seen of Nazi Germany. A brutal totalitarian state! The party and its money rules. Not a pretty picture.

Jounalists need a strong editor when writing a book.

I personally believe that every American should read this book, which is well-written and packed with important information. It tells the real story behind the immense growth in China. Since China may be the most powerful country in the world, we should start learning about it.

Because of China's bustling economy, the world generally ignores its human-rights records.

The Olympics were a picture-perfect example of how things are done in China. China wanted to present a perfect picture to the world: many old and treasured homes were bulldozed, in spite of their owner's resistance; China knew about the tainted baby formula but did not release this information until after the Olympics, because the government did not want to sully the ceremonies. Many infant lives were lost because of this decision.
