Didn’t Like It“I really tried to like this book as I have heard such great things about it, but the author's writing style just does not do it for me. Just was not my cup of tea. I lost interest quickly and it took me over a week to finish it.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“It was good but not great. Kind of a wild west adventure. Not a book club favorite.”

Yes | No“I would have given it two stars if not for the forceful Siringo and the hapless Hood Roberts. Siringo alone saves this book. Both are men of actions AND men of words. Siringo's control over the spineless narrator Becket is intriguing. Becket serves his purpose but he is a lumpy bit of clay that is only worthy looking at after he has been impressed by something else. Even if that something is his one-dimensional wife. Hood offers an interesting comparison to Siringo. He is full of action and amiable talk. He is the one initial likable character. So Enger's handling of him is well done. Glendon, the semi-reformed criminal, was passable but his ending is pitiful, not honorable. ”
