A collection of interesting short stores that are not linked together but have similar themes; long enough to get emotionally invested in the characters but too short to give you more detail or plot or actual ending. Not that it wasn’t good, It was really good, I just wish some of the stories...

A collection of interesting short stores that are not linked together but have similar themes; long enough to get emotionally invested in the characters but too short to give you more detail or plot or actual ending. Not that it wasn’t good, It was really good, I just wish some of the stories were novels instead of short stories.

I loved it. I thought this book was very interesting because there was a lot of different kinds of monsters in the book. I liked the monsters because they encouraged me to draw different types of monsters. I also liked this because of the mysteries and the strangeness of it.

Deliciously weird collection of short stories. I would recommend this book to people who are fans of Tim Burton or Neil Gaiman.

Each story in this little gem is amazing. The stories are spunky, bizarre, and beautiful. The only problem is that I get completely involved in the characters and plot with each story, and then it just ends. I suppose that is the nature of the short story beast. Reading a compilation of short stories always makes me feel a little bit ADD. It's as if the author just has so many great ideas floating around in their head that they can't concentrate on one and bring it to completion. Each one of these stories could make an intriguing novel. That being said, they make fascinating short stories as well. Well done, Ms. Link. I am awaiting your next compilation - or novel ;)

Though fans of Link will recognize stories from her other collections, this short story compendium for the teen audience comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. My favorite “Faery Handbag” makes a reappearance, as do other stories featuring teenaged protagonists tangling with a strange and wonderful fantasy world. Sly readers will catch that the lone new story, Pretty Monsters, is barely disguised commentary on a certain Vampire Book that we love to hate (and hate to love).

If you grew up loving Roald Dahl’s twisted tales, give this book a try.

I've had Kelly Link's two adult collections of short stories on my "To Read" list for awhile but I have yet to read them. This is her newest collection of stories which I found in the "Teen Fiction" section and thought I might as well read it. Reading teen fiction is always as hit and miss with me and it really depends on the author's style of writing and of the subject matter. I found "Pretty Monsters" to be much too teen fiction for my liking. I really did enjoy the last two stories though, "The Constable of Abal" and "Pretty Monsters".
