“Arriving at the home of German immigrants to usher a baby into the world, midwife Sarah Brandt is horrified to learn that the woman’s sister has been found beaten to death. Only 19 years old, Gerda worked in a sweatshop and spent the nights dancing at local clubs. Known as a “Charity Girl” because she bartered her favors for gifts of trinkets, Sarah knows the police will not waste time investigating a death that many feel the young woman had coming to her. Appealing to Detective Sergent Frank Malloy for help, the two of them begin to investigate the murky underworld of the Charity Girls and their precarious occupations.”

I was really drawn into the world and the characters however there wasn't a lot of detail. Thompson doesn't take much time to describe any of the characters--what they look like, what they're feeling. She doesn't describe the city in much detail. There's also a lot of telling--too much. Readers can figure things out on their own! The editing was terrible. It did capture my attention, though. This is the second in the Gaslight Mystery series, purchased because I didn't find the first in the bookstore. I'll definitely read the first to get that background before continuing on with the series to see if it improves.”

I couldn't put it down, not as good as it's predessor, but still a great read. Sarah investigates a series of murders of young working girls. Great read! ”

SERIES/STAND ALONE: #2 in Gaslight series
TIME/PLACE: Early 1900's/NYC

FIRST LINES:Sarah heard the wailing when she was still halfway down the street
COMMENTS: MOTB discussion book. Sarah has delivered a baby for Agnes Otto, who has just found out her 16-yr-old sister, Gerda, has been murdered. Sarah, soon finds out Gerda is one of at least 4 young girls who were left for dead in a dark alley after going to a dance hall. Normally, the death of another poor immigrant is not given to much attention by the police force. Sarah sees a pattern in the deaths of these young women and seeks the help of Sergeant Frank Malloy. The trips to Coney Island were very interesting.”
“Murder on St. Mark's Place by Victoria Thompson is the second book in the Gaslight Mystery series featuring New York midwife Sarah Brandt. Sarah investigates the death of a "Charity Girl" named Gerda who got caught up in the glamorous, but dark underside of life in late 19th century New York City. And of course if Sarah is involved, then Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy can't be far behind. Sarah gets herself a little caught up in the seedy side of Gerda's life in trying to find the murderer's identity and almost gets killed herself twice! Despite that bit of over-the-top, I enjoyed this mystery very much. Thompson does a great job of getting inside Sarah and Frank's heads and showing us their growing attraction and care for each other without either acknowledging it. Sarah's involvement in Frank's son's Brian's life really helps keep the characters tied together emotionally as well. The twist at the end about the killer is fairly well projected. It's another good solid entry in the series.
