Ok, I was fascinated by the premise and HAD to keep reading to find out the motivation of the villain. THAT was disappointing. But even more disappointing was the rushed ending and the ending itself. stinker.

Its a book about the spread of Black death (plague) in England in 14th century and how a group of 9 people try to escape it. Filled with superstitions and witch-crafts, the book is written in an ancient setup.
What is fascinating is to read how people thought of church, jews, cripples and diseases in those times. You would also get to understand the level of scientific development and the way common people thought in that era.
Though the book builds up suspense and unfolds the story of each of the traveler one-by-one, I was left with a desire of sudden turn of events. But at the same time, I would appreciate the secrets that were revealed for each of the traveler, I would have never guessed them.
Conclusion: Read it if you find the first 50 pages interesting.

Compelling but with a darker turn than I expected, the story verged on horror for me. Interesting historical detail, but very unsettling. I am haunted by the ending.

Very enjoyable read. Chaucer's idea with a twist. Historical accuracy a little bit questionable at times, but gripping tale.

Loved this book! The Plague is like another character - dark, misunderstood, mysterious and evil. The suspense and surprise that keeps coming is wonderful. Definitely a twist at the end I didn't see coming.

This book is a tale of 9 travelers in northern England in 1348 who are wandering the countryside trying to avoid the plague. The details of life during this period are well researched and interesting as we begin to discover each person's secret story for being on the road and members of the troup begin dying off under questionable circumstances. Each character is sufficiently developed in the story to the point that when the personal secrets are disclosed the reader has likely already figured them out so there are no real surprises. An interesting read but not a great one and a bit plodding and contrived at times.

I've been on a big historical fiction kick lately and these characters (none of whom are who they say they are) traveling through England during the plague, grabbed me!

Excellent, different, pacy keep me interested to the end, I think it reflected the way in the middle ages reality, myth, superstition and religion all merged.
