- Mr. Larten Crepsley: Mr. Crepsley is the vampire employing Darren Shan; he works as a member of the Cirque du Freak but in his past was highly placed in the vampire community. Mr. Crepsley struggles with Darren and his new role as teacher.
- Steve Leonard: Steve Leonard is Darren's best friend.
- Madam Octa: Mr. Crespley's enormous, poisonous spider. Darren steals Madam Octa and Madam Octa bites Steve.

- Hans Hands: Hans is a freak at the Cirque du Freak and can run or walk very fast on his hands.
- The Wolfman: Wolfman is a freak at the Cirque du Freak and is half human, half wolf.
- Alexander Ribs: Alexander is a freak at the Cirque du Freak and is the skinniest man.
- Hibernius Tall: Mr. Tall is the manager of the Cirque du Freak and extremely tall. He also has powers of the mind.
- Desmond Tiny: Mr. Tiny is the shadowy villain--everyone is afraid of him and he has been around forever, but he seems friendly. It appears he eats children as well. He is the master of the little people.
- The Little People: The little people are Mr. Tiny's servants and do not speak. They are always cloaked and eat any form of meat.
