This is one of those quirky reads I so enjoy. I do not agree with many of the viewpoints the author shares. However, her relentless process of watching, learning, listening, and living... all leading up to her opinions -- that process I do recognize and connect with.

Gentle stories about living in small town Alaska. Easy to read and relate to. Written with humor. Touches on greater issues of life, death and family.

I loved this book. I read it while on a trip to Alaska and it made it come to life! I feel like Heather and I would be great pals! I too, used to write for a small town newspaper.

A lovely look at small-town Alaskan life. Comical moments and tragic moments alike make this a thoughtful and highly readable book difficult to put down.

If you lived in Haines, Alaska Heather Lende would know your name. If you passed away she'd write your obituary and go to your funeral. She would look back on your life and interview your family for the paper, and she would think about what you had done for your family, or the town, or her and her family, and what you brought to the table and think about how you would be missed.
This book is also about living in the beauty that is Alaska and how those who live there seem to live a charmed life with so much natural beauty to go around. It's about how family and friends are more important than living anywhere near a doctor or a hospital, even when facing cancer, or the end of your life because you can rely on each other.

"After helping with sets, props, and programs, I watched The Sound of Music knowing all the cast members and rooting for them as you would a home team. Everyone in the audience did the same thing. We put up with an off-key French horn player, because he's old and we all knew he was doing the best he could....When it was over, we presented flowers and locally made jewelry to the guest director... She told us that Haines was 'weird and wonderful, a place out of time'. Which we took as a compliment.
That's why local shows mean more than big Broadway productions, and local customs, shared with friends and family, take the place of other ones from other places. Happiness can be as simple as a familiar tune and someone to sing it with."

Lende made me laugh and cry in her telling of "small town Alaska". I was truly moved by her story telling and would recommend this book to anyone who loves a moving yet funny story.

I grew up in a small town -- but not this small!
Heather Lende is a person of great fellow feeling and understanding. Each chapter in this book, stands alone as a sort article in and of itself, but overall we learn so much about this tiny place in Alaska and the wonderful people who live there. And then you realize you have actually learned something new about yourself by looking at a place with such a caring interest.

A small, isolated Alaskan town obituary writer chronicles and celebrates the life of her home through the stories of death. It's not as depressing as it sounds and is actually a great celebration of life and community... Although there are several tear-jerker moments.
