“There are a lot of elements in this book that will be familiar, especially to anyone who reads YA fantasy. They have been around since Cinderella and probably before. A good kid grows up in an unloving, harsh environment and suddenly finds out that they don’t belong there, that they are special and meant for something more. They go through trials and hardships and in the end win happiness and often glory. This book does fit in that general mold but manages to distinguish itself. There are very vivid descriptions and I often found myself surprised by an unexpected turn of phase or word choice that made it a delight to read. There are a lot of things left unexplained and questions unanswered and you look forward to learning the answers along with Root in the books to come. The people and the world they live in are interesting and the relationships are realistic and well written so though you may recognize some of those familiar themes even as you are reading you never feel as if you have read this story before.”
