Surprising in many ways. He uses the device of Descartes' skeletal remains -- especially his skull -- to enlarge upon the intellectual history of the Enlightenment. Very thoughtful. Not for a scholar, but for those who wish they had paid more attention to early modern history in college, it is an invaluable and richly woven read. The final 15 pages bring it down to the present and remind us all of Descartes in the world around us and the issues he anticipated that we haven't begun to reckon with.
