Sturdily competent fantasy from a veteran Australian screenwriter, this quartet opener introduces five teenaged orphans raised together in the medieval-like kingdom of Araluen, focusing on the apprenticeship of wiry, clever Will to a mysterious scout/spy, and on Will’s changing relations with...

This book is a story that follows the live of Will noname. Will never knew his father and his mother died in childbirth. He grew up a orphan the only thing he knows about his father was that he died bravely in the great war. So will wanted to grow up and follow in his fathers footsteps and become a knight. The problem was he was a little too small to be a knight. At the day of the choosing he is refused to go to battle school. And is sadly not taken in by anyone. Except for the ranger named Halt he at first didn't want to be a ranger. But later on he learns that its not so bad to be a ranger. Now Halt his master is secretive and not talkative. Of course Will is bursting with questions and is very talkative. But after learning not to annoy a ranger the hard way he learns that some questions are best unasked. Halt teaches him the ways of being unseen and how to shoot a bow. At first when Halt first showed him the weapons the two small daggers one small and one about the size of a short sword. He was skeptical of the weapons until halt took the smaller one and threw it perfectly in to the center of the target. Will now knew that they were every bit as deadly as a sword. and perhaps even more. Halt and Will go on many dangerous adventures. Can Will noname survive his apprenticeship find out when you read the books and find out for your self.
Will: Will was orphaned as a baby and sent to Redmont Castle to live. He is slight of build and fairly short, nothing like the makings of a great warrior. But his skills seemed to lay somewhere else. Swift of mind and body and able to climb and hide with ease all of which are good traits for a Ranger. Do he realise what he's got himself into?
Halt: A middle-aged and short but clever and fit man who has and deserves his reputation as one of the greatest-ever rangers. He sees Will's potential as a ranger and recruits him as his apprentice. Shows little emotion
Horace Altman: Horace was orphaned at a young age but, unlike Will, he knew his parents briefly. They were both put into the same Ward with other orphaned children. His big build and other skills landed him in the position Will always wanted, Battleschool. He starts out being Will's enemy, but with time you discover he is actually a very kind, honorable and trusting young man- unless you get him mad. His obvious skill for the sword was evident on his first days in the Battleschool.
Morgarath: Morgarath was the former Baron of Castle Gorlan, but after conspiring against the king he was banished to the Mountains of Rain and Night.
Gilan: Gilan was one of Halt's few apprentices, and is, unlike any other Ranger, skilled in sword craft. He can be very kind and humorous. He was very attached to Halt and could never let the opportunity pass to try and outsmart the grim Ranger.
Baron Arald: Arald is the Baron of Redmont Castle. He looks after Will. Slightly overweight and cheery, his jokes are often taken as serious comments. He is a skilled knight.
Wargals: Ancient, terrifying creatures from the Mountains of Rain and Night. They respond to Morgarath's telepathic commands.
Kalkara: Dreadful ancient beasts in the Mountains of Rain and Night - allies of Morgarath. Something like a cross between a bear and a gorilla, but their fur is armor-thick. If you look into their eyes, you freeze. They will do anything for silver.
“Halt added. "Can you cook, boy?""Cook, sir?" Will asked uncertainly. Halt raised his eyes to some unseen superior being."Why do young people invariably answer a question with another question?" he asked. Then, receiving no reply, he continued. "Yes, cook. Prepare food so that one might eat it. Make meals. I assume you know what food is- what meals are?"”
