It was very enjoyable, the plot, the action, the characters. WOW! I loved quiet old Halt, Young Will, Horace the Knight in Training. These are shorter novels than I am used to reading but they...” see full review » see other reviews » |

The Ruins of Gorlan is the first in a series of books written by John Flanagan that is definitely written to appeal to teenage boys. Unlike the books out there focused on witchcraft and magic and the supernatural as young adult books seem to be revolving around these days, the Ranger's Apprentice series focuses on more of an old fantasy feel with knights and rangers and diplomats and strange creatures abounding.
In this first novel we're introduced to a group of five orphans. There's Will, the puny boy with no clear purpose, Horace, the large boy that seems destined for a life as a warrior knight, Alyss, a beautifully spoken girl with the talent for diplomacy, Jenny, a rounded girl who has a gift for food and George, a stuttering boy who seems taken with the legal division of scribes.
Although the book is definitely written for a younger audience, Flanagan's development manages to hold the interest of older readers as well. I found myself finding favorites and feeling sympathy for the plights of the children as they begin to find their way in the world. I've been told the books get better as they move along. With a solid base like this, it's easy to see why.”

All too soon Will is included in the hunt for the evil Kalkara, whose mission is to assassinate the kingdom's leaders to make way for his own takeover.”
