Just started reading this - pretty gritty but captivating - I think it's going to be good! Yes a good read I would recommend this - gave me a real insight into an America I knew nothing about

A modern day catcher in the Rye. When I read it I had Sprinsteen & the gaslight anthem as a perfect soundtrack

Isaac English, his sister Lee, his father Henry, his best friend Billy Poe, Billy's mother Grace, and Grace's sometime lover Sheriff Harris each take center stage in the chapters of American Rust. Despite their desparate circumstances, bad choices and bad luck, these characters maintain their humanity and dignity. Meyer gets us inside their heads and hearts, with run-on and incomplete sentences that might, in a lesser hand, have seemed stylized rather than natural. Hope is a thread that runs throughout to keep this story from becoming too grim.

Another great story of where loyalties lie within the structure of true friendship.

The characters, each speaking in the first person in separate chapters, began to annoy me. Read it to completion. It's OK, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my 'best books of the year' list.

Well-structured with alternating points of view. Characters dimensional. Prose generally fine but with some awkwardness of transition in and out of interior monologue. The "kid" voice not always convincing. Some obvious foreshadowing but still some surprises to the end. Geographic setting in the Mon Valley-- an area I know--increased the interest. Interesting story.
    Would recommend.

The fall out from Reagan (ha, ha. I always have to laugh after that name is mentioned) and the strings we strengthen and cut to become what we are. Lovely story about the choices we make (and the ones made for us) and how they can be true and false at once. If anything, this could have been longer. A random selection from the public library.
