The 2004 movie is at least 100 times better than the novel. I really disliked the writing style of Leroux. His characters were shallow, very poorly developed. The scenes are melodramatic over and over again, making the most exciting scenes seem trite. It's a wonderful idea for a novel and had...

This book is about an opera house located in Paris, France. Living there is the dreaded "Opera Ghost" who is in love with the new found singer, Christine. Christine is secretly in love with Raoul but, to Raoul it is no secret. The "OG" forbids her of loving anyone and many problems are caused by him throughout the rising action. The suspense rises when the chandelier falls on the audience right before the big debut of the next Opera. The "OG" wanted Christine to love him and became obsessed with it after a while, and Raoul just became obsessed with love. Throughout the falling action Christine becomes less and less frequently seen at the opera house and we learn more about the mysterious "Ghost". In the end, the opera house is destroyed by a fire caused by the Ghost and he is never seen again.
Overall this is such a great book with a great plot that keeps you waiting for more. Its very interesting to read since it took place such a long time ago. The theme of the book is most likely about love since, everyone in the book seems to be looking for in some sort of way. Most of the characters just want love so bad that they become obsessed with the one thing they wanted, which, made the ending very interesting.

Read this in high school french class. I hated the fact that this was written more as an editorial in a newspaper than a play, but overall it still kicks the crap out of the musical.

I wanted to read this book because I liked the play so much, and as is often the case, the book was much darker. You learn more about the origins of the Opera Ghost. I think that the basic emotion of the book was love, but the darker side of it. Of course there is some cute little scenes of love with Raoul and Christine, but at times both the OG and Raoul show obsession. The main difference between Raoul and OG's love was that Raoul tended to show more sympathy and empathy towards Christine while the phantom was only trying to feel the love that he had never felt. Without getting into too much detail, I'd definitely recommend this book to any classic horror fans or anyone that has seen the play/movie(s) to see where it all came from. To those of you who think the make-up on Gerard Butler was a good indication of the tragic face of the OG, you especially need to read this book.
