At times the narrative of the book is weighed down in research about meth addiction and recovery but overall it is a fascinating and heartbreaking true story of a father's love for his addicted son. A better title might have been "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" but Dave Eggers already took it!

A harsh look at the effects drug addiction has on the lives of those who love the addict. The father of Nic Scheff writes the pain he and his family go through as his son struggles with drug addiction. Absolute must read along with Tweak.

David Sheff allowed me to feel and understand what it is like for the families of addicts. It's hard to believe that they often suffer more than the user themselves.

Astonishing and painful story of a son's addiction. Read just before reading his son's version, Tweak. The contrast is startling. David is trying to save his son's life. Nic is just trying to get high. Wow.

This was particularly poignant because of the perspective from which it was written--rarely do we hear such disclosure from the parent of an addict. I was enthralled from page one. Check out my full review at http://www.thebook-keeper.blogspot.com/

I really enjoyed this book. It went on a bit long at the end but is an excellent look into a family affected by an addicted member. It was equally interesting to get a glimpse inside the family's life leading up to the problems.

Karl Vincent Langreck. In the novel Beautiful Boy by David Sheff , Nic and his father are the main characters in this novel. Nic is a silent who boy who makes the biggest impact on his friends and families lives. Nic first starts out trying marijuana and gets into more drugs that are powerful and takes more affect on Nic and his family. Nic starts to let his drug addition take over his life. His father tries to do everything possible to help him get out of his addiction and onto a better road for the future.
