It is the eighteenth year of Enclosure when a girl named Honor moves from the polar regions to Island 365 in the Tranquil Sea. Every day is sunny; every hour has its own shade of color in the sky. Life on the island is perfect; there is no sadness, no violence. Every family fits in to Earth Mother and her rules, except for Honor’s. Honor’s family does not fit in. She has a younger brother, Quintilian, making her family an “Unacceptable Four”. Her parents break more and more rules. They ignore curfew and do not pray to Earth Mother. Soon, they are taken away, tranquilized by large amounts of Planet Safe to become one of the Orderlies, who were slaves that were almost brain-dead. Everyone was brainwashed of their older memories, leaving only recent pasts.
When Honor’s parents, Will and Pamela, becameOrderlies, they took away their recent pasts and gave them older memories instead. Orderlies were forced to sleep in tiny buildings and were given numbers for identity. Honor must live in at the orphanage, where they are starved of love. She becomes closer to Helix, whose parents were friends of Pamela and Will. Helix showed Honor the lies of her world. When Helix and Honor are paired up for a chore of cleaning up scrap paper, he tells her that many books she has read were originally different. Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz was changed to Dorothy Dale because a gale is a storm. According to Honor’s books, she was dreaming of the journey but in the original there was a toronado. The Old Colony School’s librarian, Miss Tuttle, personally saw to the changes of these books, yet later, it is found out that she is the Forecaster, leader of the rebellion against Earth Mother, the “protector” who is worshipped for keeping the planet safe and in the Enclosure.
