Bonfire tells the story of being Super Rich in the 80's. Tom Wolfe does an excellent job of fitting an entire soap opera into a book. Entertaining, kinda like the tabloids....

This was my first experience of Tom Wolfe, and what a wild ride! I think it's his best, but the rest are definitely worth pursuing.

Never saw the movie, but the book was good, made you think about our class system. However it was also a bit cliche and I dislike books that push a certain "agenda". This didn't push too hard so I liked it.

I actually had the opportunity to meet Tom Wolfe back in the late '90s and told him I thought his expose of late 20th century American socio-political dynamics would be looked back on by the late 21st century with the appreciation we now give Twain's work. I love Wolfe's stuff... he's so dead-on!

I wasn't too crazy about this one. Wolfe's non-fiction hits me a lot harder. Updike was right when he said Wolfe's fiction was entertainment (I think he was talking about A Man in Full though...), not literature (but when am I going to try to argue with Updike?) The main themes: rich white people suck, they do lousy things, power corrupts, etc. I get it. Not a bad read, but 700+ plus pages of this? Eh.
