I am a huge fan of Morrison's work, certainly one of the most important voices in the literary world. I absolutely loved this book. “painful to read, hard to follow the story and characters. After reading the entire book, I still don't know what message the author was trying to convey.”

“EEN DAAD VAN BARMHARTIGHEID speelt zich af in Amerika tijdens de tweede helft van de zeventiende eeuw, de slavernij is nog in opkomst. Jacob Vaark is een avonturier en handelaar van Nederlandse afkomst die een bedrijfje heeft in het ruige Noorden. Hij is tegen mensenhandel, maar na aandringen van de moeder, accepteert hij toch een jong slavenmeisje als betaling. Ondanks de goede bedoelingen van de moeder voelt het meisje, Florens, zich door haar afgewezen. Ze gaat op zoek naar liefde, allereerst bij een oudere bediende van het huis, maar later ook bij een aantrekkelijke Afrikaanse hoefsmid, door wie haar leven in een stroomversnNBD|Biblion recensie

Deze roman speelt zich af in het Amerika van de 17e eeuw. De kolonist van Nederlandse afkomst Jacob Vaark ontfermt zich over de jonge zwarte slavin Florens. In Amerika is de slavernij in opkomst, maar Vaark moet niets van mensenhandel hebben. Zelf als wees opgegroeid heeft hij hart voor mensen die niet voor zichzelf kunnen zorgen. Vaark neemt Florens op in zijn huishouden, dat verder bestaat uit zijn vrouw Rebekka, de indiaanse dienstmeid Lina en het geadopteerde, getraumatiseerde meisje Sorrow. De drie eigen kinderen van Rebecca en Jacob zijn jong overleden. Jacob verdient een kapitaal in de rumhandel, waarna hij sterft aan de pokken. Hij laat een vrouwengemeenschap na zonder zijn bescherming en zonder eigen rechten. Dit verhaal is een pleidooi voor humaniteit en een kritiek op gevoelens van superioriteit vanwege ras, sekse en godsdienst. Morrisons stijl is rijk. De diverse vertelperspectieven, de innerlijke monologen en de vele flashbacks vereisen een ervaren leesniveau.elling belandt.

“This Morrison if far more redolent of Beloved than any other I've read, and I enjoyed the poetic tone and rythmn very much. I also read it through a second time immediately after finishing it, which, very much like Beloved, brought clarity to the story--what happens to whom.

The cast of characters and the time in history seem to be unusual and are very interesting. The story is engaging but (apparently) very simple. I did have my doubts about whether the "mercy," revealed at the end, is actually sufficient both in the story and as a pivotal point of the book. Further reason for not giving this book more than 3 stars would simply be that it didn't really take hold of me and I wonder what I will remember of it a year from now.”
