“Middlemarch” is so often proclaimed by critics to be our greatest novel that it begins to sound a bit like wheat germ: too good for us to be tasty. Well, let me assure everyone that it is indeed tasty; although its pleasures grow greater the longer one lets it breathe. So stick with it. It’s...

An interesting slice of social history. Quite a slog to get through but overall I'm glad I persevered with it.

Many people find this wonderful book hard to read. I've loved it when I first read it years ago. An early "womens' novel," full of bitterly sharp social satire and unforgettable characters, it's a must read.

It is a Victorian novel by female writer George Eliot (a pen name). I have to read it for a class and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is quite long, but an engaging story and characters.

Eloit tends to have repeating themes, plot lines, characters, topics and, well shoot, /everything/. Perhaps one of her best novels though, Middlemarch is perhaps the one George Eliot book I would recommend. A story about Middlemarch society, from the working class to the nobility, and how their worlds interact, empower and constrain them.

Dorothea can kiss my human, mortal butt.

The characters in this book fascinated me. There are a billion political and historical allusions here, too, but I just loved the characters and thinking about how much societal pressure impacts a person.

Strong women fill the pages of this lengthy book; however, it is not one to be missed. If you are a lover of Jane Austen, you will love Middlemarch.

The author has a keen insight into human nature. The characters are well developed and I found myself particularly drawn to the characters of Susan and Caleb Garth. The relationship of mutual respect was one I enjoyed reading about. One of the strongest messages I recieved while reading the book was that each life, no matter how it is valued by others, has an impact. Our intentions do matter and how we act upon those to better ourselves and the lives of others matters. I highly recommend this book. Well worth your time, indeed.
