Blubber

by Judy Blume

Blubber is a good name for her, the note from Caroline said about Linda. Jill crumpled it up and left it on the corner of her school desk. She didn't want to think about Linda or her dumb report on the whale just then. Jill wanted to think about Halloween.
But Robby grabbed the note and before Linda stopped talking it had gone halfway around the room.
That's where it all started...there... (read more)

Worst book i've ever read! I hate it. The kids are horrible and all I remember is that they indulge in bullying a fat girl. I think it inspires bullying and says that if you stand up for yourself or for others, you will be a bullying target. So you should NOT be brave and stand up for your rights.

The weird thing about this book is that it’s not told through the girl they call Blubber. Instead it’s actually a story about one of her classmates, Jill Brenner, and her observations, impressions, and interactions with the girl. The story deals with peer pressure, weight issues, and bullying.

This was really well-written and a super short read but man oh man was it difficult to read for all that. It brings back all the unpleasant memories of being bullied and being a bully. Grade school kids are terrible monsters. I kinda wish Tracy was the main character, but it's a nice change to get into the head of someone you don't really like.

This is not really my kind of book, but it has a good moral.

This book teaches a good lesson. I thought it was pretty good. I would recommend it to people who feel in secure about themselves.

I'd read this book many years ago, but I didn't remember much about it, so I decided to read it again. I found it to be a painful and unpleasant read. The children in the story are cruel, and their actions are downright criminal. The main character Jill, although not the ringleader, gleefully joins in the torment of a classmate, so I didn't feel her pain when the tables turned and she became the target. I also found the ending unsatisfying. Although Jill stands up for herself against the class leader, there is no indication that she feels any remorse about her own bullying.

Reading Judy Blume is hit or miss. Some of her books, such as ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET, are wonderful and insightful, while others miss the mark.
